Debian 9 is available
A few months ago Debian has launched “Stretch’ the successor of “Jessie”. This edition comes with new features and updates and it is more stable than before. Debian is one of the oldest Linux Distributions and it is very popular among users. Debian lovers usually use this operating system due to its free software and stability. The stability has also led it to be the foundation of Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux distributions. This release of Debian took 2 years of development and it can be installed on your dedicated server via our website or your customer portal.
In this newest edition, Debian uses the Linux 4.9 kernel. Stretch uses the EXT4 file-system. There are a few features that we would like to highlight below:
Firefox and Thunderbird
Another important change is that Iceweasel and Icedove are replaced by Firefox and Thunderbird. For a while, this browser and mail client were not allowed to use these names but this has changed with this release.
MariaDB is default
The default MSQL variant in Debian 9 is now MariaDB. The change from MySQL 5.5 or 5.6 will automatically be performed when you have upgraded your server to Debian 9.
Verification feature
The Reproducible Build project has helped Debian 9 to add an important verification feature. 90% of the source package build bit-for-bit identical binary packages, this makes the overall Linux experience more secure.
Debugging is made easier
The debug packages are now easier to use. In this version, a new ‘dbg-sym’ repository has been added to the APT source list. This will provide debug symbols automatically.
‘modern’ branch of GnuPG
Debian 9 Stretch is the first Debian version which features ‘modern’ branch of GnuPG in ‘gnupg’ package.
UEFI support is improved
The UEFI support has been improved in this release. It also supports Debian installation on 32-bit UEFI firmware with a 64-bit kernel.
